Sam and Paul met in Manchester, and Sam generously took Paul under his musical wing before meeting Tom at Manchester university where the three presently study. Sam, Paul and Tom played as a three-piece for a while, practicing in Paul's house and performing their first gig at Peninsula near Withington. After the success of this gig the band bought a bass guitar and Lee completed the band in early 2003 as a drummer. Island retain their musical flexibility thanks to the multi-talented aspects of the musicians: they play in multiple set-ups including

  • 3 guitar
  • 3 guitar/drums
  • Bass/keyboard/guitar/drums
  • 2 guitar/bass/drums

The band have been asked back to Peninsula repeatadly following a full venue at every one of their gigs. Island produce a unique melody-lead rousing sound, often noted for it's versitility and originality.

The name for the band came about last year when finalising their first gig at Peninsula. The band noticed the bar's slogan - 'Almost an Island' and the name stemmed from there.
